Epidemiology of cattle movement networks

Network science has become more relevant over the course of the past twenty years, largely because of the massive adoption of the Internet and social networks. A lot of the knowledge acquired in these fields has also been applied to biological phenomena like disease transmission. Many of the latest research efforts are focused towards modelling the spread of one or more pathogens on national-scale networks. The difficulties involved are divisible in two large groups: on one hand, the traditional issues of parameter estimation, associated with modelling; on the other, the necessity of handling and processing large amounts of data in short time frames.

This project attempts to study the epidemiological behavior of the Italian cattle movement network in relation to Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) through an in-depth integration between classical network science and modern programming techniques suited to Big Data.   

Attività di ricerca

PhD Project suspended from August 1st  to November 30th, 2016. During that period, internship in "IT integration in the health surveillance for IBR applied to bulk milk" - Prof. Sergio Rosati, University of Turin. The internship required knowledge of epidemiology and veterinary public health, as well as IT skills in software development and data management and analysis.
